Holy Hill is a bustling community in Hubertus, just outside of Milwaukee. Our ministry at Holy Hill vibrant. For the local community, Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill is their home parish. The friars hear confessions, celebrate the Mass, and offer catechesis.
The Discalced Carmelite friars arrived at St. Florian’s in West Milwaukee in 1913 the year after the parish was founded. The bishop asked the friars to staff the Austrian immigrant parish because our friars could speak their language. We celebrated our centennial in 2013. The monastery is less than a mile from Miller Park, home to our MLB team, the Milwaukee Brewers. This monastery is our provincial office.
Our community is on a 5-acre parcel amidst the busyness of Washington DC. We are about a mile from the White House and three miles from Capitol Hill.
Our monastery is adjacent to the campus of Boston College. Our ministry includes working with the secular order (OCDS) and our order’s treasury. Also, it is here that Br. Augustine, our provincial tailor, crafts the habits for all of the friars.
Our community in Nairobi is a treasure. Here we have a large retreat house that hosts groups throughout the year. We also do all levels of formation here as young men discern and enter our order. Here we have a massive library on Carmelite history and spirituality that is used by people throughout Africa.
Our focus at this monastery is our work with and for the retreat center attached to it. This is the residence of our provincial-delegate for thisregion. We offer spiritual retreats to individuals and groups on themes of Carmelite Spirituality and growth in the spiritual life.
